Looks how to spot one

Eel-shaped body

A long, eel-like fish that is neither a true goby nor a blenny. Young fish are black with a white stripe along the body; as they grow, the stripe breaks into white bars or spots, giving a 'convict' pattern.213

Coloursblack or dark bluewhite stripe (young)white bars or spots (adult)23

Personality what they are like

Peaceful toward other fish and best kept in a small group or pair. Adults are quite secretive and like to stay in their tunnels.31

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Juveniles are active by day, swimming in tight schools to feed, while adults spend most of their time inside the burrow.2

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Provide a sand bed for burrowing and build rockwork on the bare tank floor, because this fish digs enough to unsettle all but the most stable structures. A pair or group should be added at the same time.23

Home where they are happiest

Around 55 to 60 US gallons (208 to 227 L) or more, with a sand-covered bottom for burrows. Saltwater at about 22 to 26 °C, pH 8.1 to 8.4, dKH 8 to 12, specific gravity 1.020 to 1.025. In the wild it lives in shallow lagoons and coastal reefs at about 3 to 30 m.31

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Carnivore in the aquarium. Offer fresh or frozen seafood, mysis shrimp and brine shrimp, about twice a day. Wild juveniles eat plankton.32

Company who they like around

A schooling fish that does well in pairs or small groups introduced together; it has been bred in home aquariums.13

The story where it all began

Pieter Bleeker described the species in 1856. It sits in its own small family, Pholidichthyidae, which holds only two species. The marine biologist Eugenie Clark studied its unusual family life in the Solomon Islands.2

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Despite its names, it is neither a goby nor a blenny but belongs to a family with only two species.2

  2. 2

Young fish look like the striped catfish Plotosus lineatus, a likely case of mimicry.1

  3. 3

A school swims so closely that it can look like one large animal.1

  4. 4

Its tunnel system can reach about 6 m long, and the parents can move around 3 kg of sand in a single day.2

  5. 5

At night, juveniles hang from the tunnel roof by thin mucus threads.2

The care rhythm a typical week and year

A typical home-care rhythm for an Engineer Goby. A starting point, not a vet's advice.

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Engineer Goby?

Feed your Engineer Goby small amounts once or twice a day. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding daily, and it's best to offer just enough that they finish in a couple of minutes.32 Pet Wiki plan

What does an Engineer Goby eat, and what should it never eat?

Your Engineer Goby is a carnivore and enjoys fresh or frozen seafood, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp. Avoid any plant-based foods or dry flakes, as they need meaty foods to thrive.32

How much space does an Engineer Goby need?

A tank of about 55 to 60 US gallons (208 to 227 L) or more is recommended. This gives them room to burrow and swim, especially if you keep a small group.31

What temperature, light or water does an Engineer Goby need?

Keep the water at 22 to 26 °C, pH 8.1 to 8.4, dKH 8 to 12, and specific gravity 1.020 to 1.025. Normal aquarium lighting is fine, and they appreciate a sand bed for burrowing.31

How often should I clean an Engineer Goby's home?

Furry Diary's plan suggests a weekly water test and glass cleaning, with a 10-20% water change every two weeks. Daily top-ups with fresh RO water help maintain stable salinity. Pet Wiki plan

Can an Engineer Goby live with others?

Yes, they are peaceful and do best in pairs or small groups introduced together. They can live with other non-aggressive fish, but adults are secretive and stay in their tunnels.31

How long does an Engineer Goby live?

Lifespan varies depending on care, but with proper conditions they can live several years. For specific estimates, ask a good breeder or an exotic-pet vet.

Can I handle an Engineer Goby?

It's best not to handle them, as they are delicate and stress easily. They prefer to stay in their burrows and should be observed rather than touched.2
