Personality what they are like
The Maremmano is steady, level and willing, with the patience to stand for long stretches and the nerve to work cattle in close quarters. It is also responsive and shows genuine initiative, making it a confident partner for an amateur rider. It is calm, thoughtful, rarely nervous, and develops a strong bond of trust with its rider.24
The story where it all began
The Maremmano is an ancient Italian breed from the Maremma region of Tuscany and northern Lazio. It was developed by the butteri (herdsmen) to work with semi-wild Maremmana cattle in a harsh, marshy environment. The breed's exact origins are not fully known, but it is thought to have been developed from North African stock combined with Spanish, Barb, Neapolitan and Arabian blood. During the 19th century, Thoroughbred, Norfolk Roadster and other blood was probably added. Extensive crossing with Thoroughbred and other breeds has led to a more athletic type called the Maremmano migliorato (Improved Maremmano). The breed has had a Stud Book only since 1980.154
Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Maremmano, and what should it eat?
The Maremmano is an undemanding feeder and maintains itself on very little, so in light work limit its grass and keep its bucket modest. Furry Diary's starting plan is to provide fresh food and water daily. For exact amounts, check the feed label and consult your vet.24 Pet Wiki plan
Which foods and plants are dangerous for a Maremmano?
Common dangerous foods for horses include chocolate, caffeine, avocado, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and xylitol. Avoid alcohol, yeast dough, and dairy as well. For a full list, ask your vet or refer to trusted sources like the ASPCA.6
How much space and land does a Maremmano need?
Maremmani are traditionally raised in semi-freedom on large pastures with room to roam. They need daily turnout and thrive with space for exercise and varied terrain. For specific acreage, consult a good breeder or your vet.24 Pet Wiki plan
What kind of shelter does a Maremmano need?
This breed handles heat and humidity well but still needs access to shade and water, especially in summer. Provide a shelter that offers protection from weather extremes, such as a run-in shed. For details, ask your vet or a good breeder.24
How do I look after a Maremmano's hooves or feet?
The Maremmano has excellent feet with dense horn and strong legs, and many work unshod. Furry Diary's starting plan includes daily hoof picking and a farrier visit every six weeks. Routine farriery is usually all that's needed.23 Pet Wiki plan
Does a Maremmano need grooming or shearing?
Grooming is important for bonding and health, but the Maremmano does not require shearing. Its coat is sturdy and suited to weather. Regular brushing helps keep it clean and check for issues.1
Can a Maremmano live alone?
The Maremmano is a sociable horse that does well in herd environments and forms strong bonds. It is traditionally raised with other horses for mental balance. Living alone can be stressful, so consider a companion if possible.43
How long does a Maremmano live?
The Maremmano has a lifespan of 25 to 31 years, which is quite long for a horse. With good care, regular vet visits, and proper nutrition, they can enjoy a full, healthy life.23
Is a Maremmano good with children?
Yes, the Maremmano is steady, calm, and thoughtful, with the patience to stand for long stretches. It develops a strong bond of trust and is a confident partner for amateur riders, making it suitable for families with children under supervision.24
What regular vet care does a Maremmano need?
Furry Diary's starting plan includes annual dental checks and parasite prevention as your vet recommends. Since horses on permanent pasture carry a heavier worm burden, parasite control is especially important. The breed is generally healthy with no breed-specific issues.23 Pet Wiki plan
