the things everyone asksOwner questions

How often should I feed my Jindo, and at what times?

Feed your Jindo at least two meals a day, ideally at the same times each morning and evening. Puppies need three to four smaller meals. Pet Wiki's starting plan is to follow a consistent schedule, and your vet can help adjust portions for your dog's age and activity.4 Pet Wiki plan

What should a Jindo eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Feed a high-quality dog food appropriate for your Jindo's age and size. Dangerous foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and macadamia nuts. Always check with your vet for a complete list and never give human treats without guidance.5

How often should I bathe a Jindo?

Pet Wiki's starting plan suggests a bath about every 10 weeks, or at least once every three months. Bathe more often if your Jindo gets very dirty or has skin issues, but avoid over-bathing to protect their double coat.6 Pet Wiki plan

How often does a Jindo need brushing?

Brush your Jindo every three days, and daily during heavy shedding seasons. Their double coat needs regular brushing to remove loose fur and keep it healthy. Pet Wiki's starting plan recommends this routine.1 Pet Wiki plan

How do I trim a Jindo's nails, and how often?

Trim nails about every four weeks, or sooner if you hear clicking on the floor. Cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick (the pink part). If unsure, ask your vet or a groomer to show you how.6 Pet Wiki plan

How much exercise does a Jindo need?

Your Jindo needs daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy. Pet Wiki's starting plan includes daily walks and play. This breed has high energy and a strong hunting instinct, so a securely fenced yard is important.23 Pet Wiki plan

How do I look after a Jindo's teeth and ears?

Brush your Jindo's teeth daily if possible, at least two to three times a week, using dog-safe toothpaste. Check ears every two weeks and clean gently with a vet-recommended solution, never pushing anything into the ear canal.6 Pet Wiki plan

How long does a Jindo live?

A Jindo's lifespan varies, but with good care they often live into their teens. Senior years usually start around age 8, so regular vet checkups become even more important then. Ask your vet for breed-specific longevity information. Pet Wiki plan

Is a Jindo good with children and other pets?

Jindos form strong bonds with their family and can be good with children if raised together, but they are cautious with strangers. Early, steady socialisation helps them get along with other pets, though their hunting instinct may be strong. Always supervise interactions.123

Can a Jindo be left alone?

Jindos are happiest with their main person and may struggle with long periods alone. They need daily companionship and mental stimulation. If left alone too often, they can become anxious or destructive. A good breeder or vet can offer advice based on your routine.123

per year, in your countryWhat a Jindo costs

Running costs for a Jindo, built from current prices in each country: food scaled to the weight of the breed, insurance to its size, the rest per country. The purchase price and unplanned vet bills come on top.

Estimates from the sources linked on each line. Food: a complete dry food at about 3,600 kcal/kg at the NRC maintenance energy for the average weight of the breed. Insurance: a typical adult policy scaled by size; real quotes depend on breed, age and cover.

Jindo tip

Jindos can be picky eaters and may go on hunger strikes if bored with their food, so try rotating dog food toppers to keep them engaged. Treats should be used sparingly for training and must not exceed 10% of their daily calories, as the breed is prone to obesity and hypothyroidism, which can cause unexplained weight gain.

told by a JindoA day in the life

I wake to the sound of the sea and my human's voice. We walk the coastal path, where I sniff the salty air and spot a rabbit darting into the brush. I stay close, knowing my job is to watch. After a game of fetch with a stick, we return home. I lie by the gate, keeping an eye on the lane. In the afternoon, I help my human in the garden, digging for roots. At sunset, we share a quiet moment on the cliff, watching the waves. I feel loyal and calm, grateful for this simple life.

A made-up story, just for fun. Not advice of any kind.

where it all beganJindo history

The Jindo developed over a very long time on Jindo Island, where isolation kept the local dogs distinct; no written record explains exactly how it began. It was listed as Natural Monument no. 53 in 1938 under Japanese rule, and South Korea confirmed that status in 1962, protecting the breed on its home island.132
