what they are likeJack Russell Terrier temperament

A spirited little dog with a big personality: upbeat, curious and always ready for action. It is confident without being pushy toward people, loves having a job to do and tends to speak up when something catches its attention, which makes it a keen watchdog. Its hunting heritage shows in a strong chase instinct and plenty of determination, so it thrives with owners who enjoy training and games.1247

how to spot oneJack Russell Terrier coat and colours

Three weatherproof coat varieties: smooth, broken and rough

A small, sturdy and supple working terrier built slightly longer than tall, with a flexible body of medium length and a chest compact enough to be spanned by two hands (girth roughly 40-43 cm). The dark, almond-shaped eyes give a sharp, clever look. The coat can be short and flat, wiry with facial furnishings, or somewhere in between, and in every version it is dense and resistant to weather. The tail may hang at rest but rises when the dog is moving.12

what to watchJack Russell Terrier health problems

The conditions the breed clubs and health schemes name for the Jack Russell Terrier. Most animals of the breed never get them; this is what to ask a breeder or an insurer about.

  • Primary lens luxation (PLL) The lens of the eye slips out of place in middle age, which is painful and can cause glaucoma; a DNA test shows carriers.UK Kennel Club lists the PLL DNA test as Good Practice and calls it a significant concern in the breed ↗
  • Inherited ataxia (SCA and LOA) Two inherited nerve diseases that cause wobbly, uncoordinated movement; DNA tests let breeders avoid them.DNA tests for SCA and LOA listed as Best Practice by the UK Kennel Club; no published rate ↗
  • Slipping kneecaps (patellar luxation) The kneecap slips out of place, causing a skipping walk; severe cases need surgery.Patella evaluation recommended by the AKC parent club (Russell Terrier); no published rate ↗
  • Deafness Some puppies are born deaf in one or both ears, more often with lots of white; a BAER hearing test shows it.BAER test recommended by the AKC parent club; breed listed for congenital deafness by LSU; no published rate ↗
  • Other inherited eye disease Cataracts and other eye changes are checked at a yearly eye exam.Eye exam recommended by the AKC parent club and UK Kennel Club Best Practice; no published rate ↗

per year, in your countryWhat a Jack Russell Terrier costs

Running costs for a Jack Russell Terrier, built from current prices in each country: food scaled to the weight of the breed, insurance to its size, the rest per country. The purchase price and unplanned vet bills come on top.

Estimates from the sources linked on each line. Food: a complete dry food at about 3,600 kcal/kg at the NRC maintenance energy for the average weight of the breed. Insurance: a typical adult policy scaled by size; real quotes depend on breed, age and cover.

how busy a day looksJack Russell Terrier exercise needs

High-energy breed. The Royal Kennel Club suggests up to an hour of exercise a day, and Hill's around 40 minutes of vigorous activity such as hikes and fetch, plus mental challenges. Not a good match for a sedentary household.642

the hands-on bitsJack Russell Terrier grooming and care

Low-maintenance coat: a brush about once a week is usually enough, though all three coat types shed. Rough and broken coats may need occasional tidying of the harsh outer hair.64

where it all beganJack Russell Terrier history

The breed traces back to the Reverend John 'Jack' Russell (born 1795), a Devon clergyman and devoted fox hunter. In 1819, while a student at Oxford, he bought a small white terrier with tan patches over her eyes and ears named Trump from a local milkman, and she became the founding dog of his strain. Russell bred white-bodied terriers that could run with the hounds and then work underground to bolt a fox, and by the 1850s his dogs were regarded as a distinct type. After his death in 1883 a few breeders carried the line on. Over time two shapes emerged: a taller, squarer dog that became the Parson Russell Terrier, and a shorter, longer-bodied dog used for fox and vermin work. That shorter type was taken up with particular enthusiasm in Australia, where the Jack Russell Terrier Club of Australia was founded in 1972 and the breed was standardised. The FCI adopted it with Great Britain as country of origin and Australia as country of development (definitive acceptance 2003), the UKC recognised it in 2001, and The Royal Kennel Club followed in 2016. In the United States the related Russell Terrier gained full AKC recognition in 2012.316527

told by a Jack Russell TerrierA day in the life

I bounce out of bed before my human's alarm goes off, there's so much to do! First, I inspect the garden for any new smells. I dig a little hole (just for fun), then chase a squirrel up the tree. After breakfast, we play fetch with my tennis ball, I never get tired. I can hear the mail truck from a mile away and give a sharp bark to announce it. In the afternoon, my human teaches me a new trick; I love the treats! We go for a hike where I sniff every leaf and stick. At home, I curl up beside my human, but my ears still twitch at every sound.

A made-up story, just for fun. Not advice of any kind.

the things everyone asksOwner questions

How often should I feed my Jack Russell Terrier, and at what times?

Feed your Jack Russell Terrier at least two meals a day for an adult, and three to four smaller meals for a puppy. Pet Wiki's starting plan is to feed twice daily, and you can adjust times to fit your routine. Always follow the food label for amounts and check with your vet for your dog's specific needs.412 Pet Wiki plan

What should a Jack Russell Terrier eat, and which foods are dangerous?

A complete, balanced dog food formulated for small breeds, matched to your dog's life stage and activity level, is ideal. Dangerous foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and macadamia nuts, so keep these away from your terrier.413

How often should I bathe a Jack Russell Terrier?

Pet Wiki's starting plan suggests a bath about every eight weeks, and the ASPCA recommends at least once every three months. Bathe more often if your dog gets very dirty or has skin issues, but avoid over-bathing to keep its coat healthy.14 Pet Wiki plan

How often does a Jack Russell Terrier need brushing?

A weekly brush is usually enough for all three coat types, as the coat is low-maintenance. Rough and broken coats may need occasional tidying of the harsh outer hair. Pet Wiki's starting plan is to brush every seven days.64 Pet Wiki plan

How do I trim a Jack Russell Terrier's nails, and how often?

Trim nails every three weeks, or sooner if you hear clicking on the floor. Cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick (the pink part inside), and use a proper dog nail trimmer. If unsure, ask your vet or a groomer for guidance.14 Pet Wiki plan

How much exercise does a Jack Russell Terrier need?

This high-energy breed needs up to an hour of exercise daily, with about 40 minutes of vigorous activity like hikes and fetch, plus mental challenges. Pet Wiki's starting plan suggests about 120 minutes a day, so be ready for an active lifestyle.642 Pet Wiki plan

How do I look after a Jack Russell Terrier's teeth and ears?

Brush your dog's teeth daily with pet-safe toothpaste, and check ears every two weeks, never pushing anything into the ear canal. Pet Wiki's starting plan includes daily teeth brushing and a fortnightly ear check. Your vet can show you the best technique.14 Pet Wiki plan

How long does a Jack Russell Terrier live?

Jack Russell Terriers typically live between 13 and 15 years, so you can look forward to many happy years together. With good care, regular vet check-ups, and a healthy lifestyle, your terrier can enjoy a long life.4

Is a Jack Russell Terrier good with children and other pets?

This breed is very people-oriented and affectionate with its family, but its strong prey drive means early socialisation and supervision are sensible around small pets and other dogs. With proper training, it can be good with children, but always supervise interactions.437

Can a Jack Russell Terrier be left alone?

This breed is very people-oriented and happiest when included in daily activities, so it may struggle with long periods alone. It adapts to house or flat life if its exercise and play needs are met, but it is suited to active homes rather than quiet, sedentary ones.42
