Looks how to spot one

Small, deep-bodied scaled characin

A tiny tetra that glows red toward the rear. The front half is silvery with two dark vertical bars behind the gill cover, and most fins are washed in red. Males are slimmer and brighter, with dark tips on the anal and pelvic fins.31

Colourssilver front bodyflame red rear body and finstwo dark shoulder barsselectively bred orange, golden, diamond and albino strains13

Personality what they are like

Gentle and sociable. Within a group the leading males have small, harmless contests, which adds interest without bothering other fish.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

An active shoaling swimmer that likes open water in front of planted areas.13

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Easy to keep with steady water quality and routine partial water changes. Colours are strongest in a well-planted tank with a varied diet.1

Home where they are happiest

Tank with a base of at least about 60 x 30 cm (around 54 litres). Temperature about 20 to 28 °C, pH about 5.5 to 7.8, water from soft to fairly hard (1 to 25 dGH across sources). In the wild it lives in small, slow, shaded streams with clear or brown water.12

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivore. Natural food includes small insects, worms, tiny crustaceans, algae and plant matter. In the aquarium give quality dried food plus small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, mosquito larvae and Daphnia.12

Company who they like around

Keep at least 5, ideally 8 to 10 or more, with other small peaceful fish such as small tetras and catfish.12

The story where it all began

Flame tetras arrived in the aquarium hobby in 1920 through C. Bruening of Hamburg, a few years before George S. Myers described the species in 1924. It has been bred commercially for so long that wild fish are no longer collected for the trade.31

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It was kept by aquarists for about four years before scientists formally described it in 1924.3

  2. 2

The fish in shops are captive-bred, and breeders have created orange, golden, diamond and albino strains.1

  3. 3

A female can lay roughly 200 to 330 eggs, which hatch in 2 to 3 days.2

  4. 4

Its homeland includes the streams around the city of Rio de Janeiro, which is where the nickname 'Rio tetra' comes from.3

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Flame Tetra?

Feed small amounts once or twice a day. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests feeding daily, and a varied diet helps keep their colours strong.1 Pet Wiki plan

What does a Flame Tetra eat, and what should it never eat?

They are omnivores and enjoy quality dried food plus small live or frozen foods like bloodworm and Daphnia. Never feed anything that could harm them; ask a vet or good breeder for specific foods to avoid.12

How much space does a Flame Tetra need?

A tank with a base of at least 60 x 30 cm (around 54 litres) is recommended. They are active shoalers and need open water in front of planted areas.12

What temperature, light or water does a Flame Tetra need?

Keep water temperature between 20 and 28 °C, pH around 5.5 to 7.8, and hardness from soft to fairly hard (1 to 25 dGH). They come from small, shaded streams, so moderate lighting with planted areas is ideal.12

How often should I clean a Flame Tetra's home?

Furry Diary's plan suggests a weekly partial water change of about 25%, along with weekly glass cleaning and water testing. Rinse the filter monthly in old tank water, never tap water. Pet Wiki plan

How long does a Flame Tetra live?

They typically live for about 4 years with proper care.2

Can I handle a Flame Tetra?

It's best not to handle them; they are delicate fish and handling can cause stress or injury. Enjoy watching them swim in their tank instead.
