Daily activity how busy a day looks

Needs daily time to run, hop and explore, with puzzle feeders, tunnels and toys to keep it busy.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

The short coat is low maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. Routine care is mostly regular hands-on checks of coat, nails and teeth plus grooming to keep the coat in good order.23

Home where they are happiest

Needs a secure living area of at least 3m x 2m x 1m with room to hop, stretch, play and hide, plus toys, tunnels and foraging chances for enrichment.3

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Plenty of hay forms the base of the diet and keeps the constantly growing teeth worn down, with fresh leafy greens and a measured portion of good-quality pellets. Carrots are best kept as an occasional treat.3

Company who they like around

A sociable animal that is happiest living with at least one other rabbit; the RSPCA usually rehomes rabbits in pairs.3

The story where it all began

A Scottish breeder produced the first Smoke Pearls from Sable rabbits in the late 1920s, in both Siamese and Marten patterns. The breed was first called the Smoke Beige and took its present name when the British Fur Rabbit Society adopted its standard in 1932.1

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Smoke Pearl?

Your Smoke Pearl needs unlimited hay every day, plus a daily portion of fresh leafy greens and a measured amount of good-quality pellets. Furry Diary's starting plan is to refill hay daily and follow the food label and your vet for exact pellet amounts.34 Pet Wiki plan

What should a Smoke Pearl eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Plenty of hay is the main food, with fresh leafy greens and a small portion of pellets. Carrots are only occasional treats. Never give avocado, chocolate, onions, garlic, muesli mixes, or any processed human food.345

Should I bathe a Smoke Pearl?

No, you should never bathe a rabbit. They keep themselves clean, and bathing can cause stress and health problems. Just check the fur around the tail daily, especially in summer, and spot-clean if needed. Pet Wiki plan

Does a Smoke Pearl need brushing?

The short coat needs only occasional brushing, but Furry Diary's plan suggests brushing weekly, and daily while moulting. This helps keep the coat in good order and is a nice bonding time.23 Pet Wiki plan

How do I look after a Smoke Pearl's nails and teeth?

Check teeth weekly as they never stop growing, and trim nails about every six weeks. A diet of unlimited hay helps wear teeth down naturally. Ask your vet or a good breeder for nail-trimming guidance.3 Pet Wiki plan

How much space and exercise does a Smoke Pearl need?

Your rabbit needs a secure area of at least 3m x 2m x 1m to hop and play, plus at least 4 hours of free-roam time daily. Include tunnels, toys, and puzzle feeders for enrichment.3 Pet Wiki plan

Should a Smoke Pearl live alone or with friends?

Smoke Pearls are sociable and happiest living with at least one other rabbit. The RSPCA usually rehomes rabbits in pairs, so consider getting a neutered companion.3

How long does a Smoke Pearl live?

Lifespan varies by individual care and genetics. Ask your vet or a good breeder for typical expectations for this breed.

Is a Smoke Pearl a good pet for children?

Rabbits can be good family pets with gentle handling and supervision. They are delicate, so children should be taught calm, respectful interaction. Always supervise young children.3

How do I hold a Smoke Pearl?

Always support the rabbit's full body, with one hand under the chest and the other under the hindquarters. Never lift by the ears or scruff. Ask your vet or a good breeder for a demonstration.3
