Dogs in Argentina: rules, tax and travel

No national registration, tax or microchip rule for pet dogs and cats was found; keeping rules are mostly provincial and municipal. Imports need a veterinary certificate and a valid rabies vaccine, with no quarantine listed.

Registration, leash and potentially dangerous dog rules are set by provinces and municipalities, and none were checked here.

Registration and microchip

Registration

Buenos Aires City keeps a registry of domestic animals and introduced a microchip system for identification in 2019. No national registration found.[2]

Other rules

National law 14.346 makes animal mistreatment and cruelty a crime, with prison of 15 days to 1 year for mistreatment.[3]

Travelling to Argentina with a dog

From an EU country

No special EU rule. Travellers need a Certificado Veterinario Internacional (CVI) from the origin authority, in Spanish, or a legalised official passport, plus a health certificate from a vet within 10 days before the CVI, a valid rabies vaccine and parasite treatment within 15 days.[4]

From outside the EU

Same documents from any country. The CVI is valid 60 days if the rabies vaccine stays valid; a first rabies vaccine must be given at least 21 days before entry. Puppies under 3 months need age certification.[4]

Rabies antibody test

No titre test is listed on the SENASA page, and a secondary source says no blood test is required.[5]

Quarantine

The SENASA page lists no quarantine. A secondary source also says none applies.[4]

Not confirmed yet: Microchip, Dog tax, Licence or owner test, Liability insurance, Leash and muzzle, Tapeworm treatment. We only show what an official or named source states.
