Dogs in Northwest Territories, Canada: rules, tax and travel

In Yellowknife dogs over 6 months must be licensed each year with proof of rabies vaccination, and must be leashed in public parks.

The territory has a Dog Act administered by Municipal and Community Affairs, but dog licensing and leash rules are set by community by-laws such as Yellowknife's.

The national rules for Canada apply here too. National rules

Registration and microchip

Registration

Dogs over 6 months must be licensed under Dog By-law No. 4755 and renewed yearly, with a vet's proof of rabies vaccination. A dog can be licensed as neutered only with a vet certificate.[1]

Leash and muzzle

Leash and muzzle

In a public park or multi-use trail a dog must be on a leash no more than 2.5 m, except in designated off-leash areas. A vicious dog must be muzzled and leashed in public.[2]

Other rules

A dog that bites without provocation is impounded and quarantined for 10 days. The by-law sets no limit on how many dogs a person may keep.[2]
