Liability insurance
Dog liability insurance costs about €66 a year in Austria. source
4-7 EUR/month basic dog liability (1 million EUR cover) x 12 (checkeverything.at, 27 May 2026, based on durchblicker.at/Konsument March-April 2026). Mandatory in Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Salzburg and Tyrol.
Before you buy
- New policies often have an age limit, so insuring young is cheaper and easier.
- There is usually a waiting period before illness cover starts.
- Conditions the animal already has are not covered.
- Check whether hereditary conditions such as hip dysplasia are covered. Each breed page lists the ones to ask about.
- A higher excess or co-payment lowers the price but raises what you pay at the vet.
- Look at the yearly limit. One operation can cost more than a cheap policy pays out.
