Liability insurance
Dog liability insurance costs about €65 a year in Spain. source
Ley 7/2023 requires dog liability insurance, but it is not enforceable until the implementing regulation sets the minimum cover; as of 6 Oct 2026 it has not been published (Selectra, citing DGSFP). Price: liability-only policies from 1.92 (Welcome) to 7.21 EUR/month (Generali), average 5.40/month (~65/yr) per Selectra. Mandatory already for potentially dangerous breeds (min 120,000 EUR cover).
Before you buy
- New policies often have an age limit, so insuring young is cheaper and easier.
- There is usually a waiting period before illness cover starts.
- Conditions the animal already has are not covered.
- Check whether hereditary conditions such as hip dysplasia are covered. Each breed page lists the ones to ask about.
- A higher excess or co-payment lowers the price but raises what you pay at the vet.
- Look at the yearly limit. One operation can cost more than a cheap policy pays out.
