the things everyone asksOwner questions

How often should I feed my Cairn Terrier, and at what times?

Feed your Cairn Terrier at least two meals a day for adults, and three to four smaller meals for puppies. A consistent schedule helps, but exact times can vary. For portion sizes, check the food label and ask your vet.7

What should a Cairn Terrier eat, and which foods are dangerous?

A balanced commercial dog food is a good choice. Avoid dangerous foods like chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and others listed by the ASPCA. Always consult your vet for the best diet for your Cairn.8

How often should I bathe a Cairn Terrier?

Pet Wiki's starting plan suggests a bath every 8 weeks, and general guidance recommends at least once every three months. Bathe more often if your Cairn gets very dirty or has skin issues, but always use a dog-safe shampoo.9

How often does a Cairn Terrier need brushing?

Brush your Cairn Terrier at least once a week to keep its weather-resistant coat healthy. Pet Wiki's starting plan recommends weekly brushing, and more frequent brushing can help reduce shedding.46

How do I trim a Cairn Terrier's nails, and how often?

Trim nails every three weeks or sooner if you hear clicking on the floor. Cut a little at a time and stop before the quick to avoid pain. If you are unsure, ask your vet or a professional groomer for guidance.9

How much exercise does a Cairn Terrier need?

Your Cairn Terrier needs up to an hour of exercise daily, plus games and training. They enjoy activities like agility and digging. Pet Wiki's starting plan includes daily walks and play to keep them happy.465

How do I look after a Cairn Terrier's teeth and ears?

Brush your Cairn's teeth daily if possible, at least two to three times a week, using dog toothpaste. Check ears every two weeks and clean gently without pushing anything inside. Your vet can show you the proper technique.9

How long does a Cairn Terrier live?

A Cairn Terrier typically lives 13 to 14 years, giving you many happy years together. With proper care, they can be a wonderful long-term companion.34

Is a Cairn Terrier good with children and other pets?

Cairn Terriers are bold, jolly, and sturdy, making them good family companions with children. Their compatibility with other pets varies, so early socialization and supervised introductions are important.156

Can a Cairn Terrier be left alone?

Cairn Terriers have an independent streak and can be left alone for moderate periods if they have had enough exercise and mental stimulation. However, they thrive on companionship and may become bored if left too long. Provide toys and a secure space, and consult your breeder or vet for specific advice.65

Cairn Terrier tip

Cairn Terriers can become overweight quickly, so measure each meal and count treats as part of the day's food. Small training pieces go further than whole treats.

told by a Cairn TerrierA day in the life

I wake up and stretch, then scratch the carpet a bit for fun. My human laughs and calls me a busy bee. We go out to the garden, and I sniff every corner, there might be a squirrel somewhere! I dig a little hole, just in case. Then we play fetch with my squeaky ball. At home, I curl up on the sofa and watch TV with my human. When the doorbell rings, I give a quick bark to say hello. It's a good day.

where it all beganCairn Terrier history

Highland farmers and gamekeepers have used these small terriers since at least the 1600s to drive foxes and other vermin out of rocky cairns, often working in little packs. The breed first appeared at UK shows in 1909 as the Short-haired Skye Terrier before the name Cairn Terrier was settled on.43
