what they are likeTonkinese temperament

A warm, confident and busy cat that likes to be involved in whatever is going on. Tonks tend to claim a lap or shoulder, keep an eye on household routines and greet visitors as if the guests came to see them. They are talkative, though their voice is gentler than a Siamese, and they often play fetch and other games. Most get on well with children, other cats and cat-friendly dogs, and can show a stubborn streak.41532

how to spot oneTonkinese coat and colours

short, close-lying, fine and silky coat

The Tonk sits neatly between its two parent breeds: firmer and rounder than the modern Siamese, lighter and longer-lined than the Burmese. It is a medium, muscular cat that feels solid in the hand, with slim legs, oval paws and an expressive tail. The head is a softly modified wedge with a blunt, rounded muzzle, medium ears with oval tips and gently almond-shaped eyes. The short coat is soft and silky with a glossy sheen, often compared to mink. In the signature mink pattern the body is a warm shade that blends gently into darker points, with eyes of aqua blue-green.4125

the things everyone asksOwner questions

How often should I feed my Tonkinese, and at what times?

Feed a complete, balanced cat food in portions that suit your cat's age, activity and body condition. Times can be set to your routine, but it's best to split the daily amount into two or more meals. Check the food label and ask your vet for exact amounts.213

What should a Tonkinese eat, and which foods are dangerous?

A complete, balanced cat food is ideal, with treats kept occasional. Dangerous foods include chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, raw dough and bones. For a full list, check the ASPCA guidance and always ask your vet.2136

Does a Tonkinese need baths?

Baths are rarely needed for a Tonkinese; only bathe if they are very dirty or sticky. Their short, silky coat stays clean with regular brushing. If you do bathe, use a cat-safe shampoo and ask your vet for advice.7

How often does a Tonkinese need brushing?

Brush your Tonkinese weekly with a rubber or bristle brush to lift loose hair and keep the coat shiny. Pet Wiki's starting plan suggests brushing every 7 days. This is easy and helps bond with your cat.4123

How do I trim a Tonkinese's claws, and how often?

Trim nails every 10 to 14 days, using cat nail clippers and taking care not to cut the quick. Start slowly, doing just a couple of claws per session. Pet Wiki's plan suggests every 21 days, but adjust based on your cat's activity. Ask your vet or a groomer for a demo.7

How much play does a Tonkinese need?

Tonkinese are energetic and playful, needing about 60 minutes of play daily. Use interactive toys, puzzle toys, fetch and climbing structures. Pet Wiki's plan recommends daily play sessions to keep them happy and trim.413

How long does a Tonkinese live?

Tonkinese typically live between 10 and 20 years, with good care and regular vet check-ups. Senior years usually start around age 11, so annual vet visits become even more important then.312

what to watchTonkinese health problems

The conditions the breed clubs and health schemes name for the Tonkinese. Most animals of the breed never get them; this is what to ask a breeder or an insurer about.

Gingivitis and dental disease

Sore gums in older cats; brushing teeth from a young age and regular checks help. CFA: the only breed-specific concern is a tendency to gingivitis in older cats; no published rate ↗

Hypokalaemia (low blood potassium)

A recessive condition from Burmese ancestry causing bouts of muscle weakness; managed with potassium, and a DNA test finds carriers. Langford Vets lists the Tonkinese among breeds at risk; no published rate ↗

Burmese head defect

A severe skull malformation in kittens that inherit two copies; carriers look normal, and a DNA test finds them. UC Davis VGL lists the Tonkinese for the test; about 5.9% of Burmese and related breeds carry it ↗

Tonkinese tip

Tonkinese cats have a high metabolism and are not prone to obesity, but portion control still matters for indoor cats. For dental health, choose VOHC-accepted dental treats to help reduce plaque and tartar, but always ask your vet before introducing new dental products.

for the dinner tableFun facts

  1. The name refers to the Tonkin region of Indochina, but only as a suggestive label; the cats have no real link to that area.5

  2. The coat pattern is a genetic blend: a mink Tonk carries one Burmese and one Siamese colour gene, so two mink parents typically produce about half mink, a quarter pointed and a quarter solid kittens.5

  3. Eye colour follows the pattern: blue in pointed cats, aqua in mink cats and green-gold in solid cats.4

  4. Fans sometimes describe the breed as part puppy, part monkey and part elephant, thanks to its playful thundering around the house.4

  5. GCCF notes the combination of patterns and colours gives 78 possible varieties.2

  6. Its voice is often likened to the soft quacking of a duck, much gentler than a Siamese.5

  7. Many Tonks happily play fetch like a dog.1

told by a TonkineseA day in the life

I wake up and immediately check the household routine. My human's alarm is my cue to perch on the edge of the bed. I meow a gentle reminder that it's time for breakfast. After that, I patrol the living room, greeting each piece of furniture as if it's a new friend. When the doorbell rings, I race to see who's come to visit me. Later, I fetch my favorite crinkle toy and drop it at my human's feet. We play for a while. Then I settle on a lap for a brief cuddle before planning my next adventure.

A made-up story, just for fun. Not advice of any kind.

where it all beganTonkinese history

Cats with the Tonkinese look appear in the Thai Cat-Book Poems from the Ayutthaya period, and some of the brown 'chocolate Siamese' brought to the West in the 1800s were probably of this type. The best-known ancestor is Wong Mau, a cat taken to the United States in 1930 who helped found the Burmese and is now thought to have been a Tonkinese herself. The modern breed began in the 1950s and 1960s when Margaret Conroy in Canada and Jane Barletta in the USA separately crossed Siamese and Burmese to get a cat that sat between the two. First known as Golden Siamese, the breed was renamed Tonkinese and recognised in Canada in the 1960s. CFA accepted it for registration in 1982 and granted championship to the mink pattern in 1984, adding the pointed and solid patterns in 2002. In Britain it was recognised by the GCCF in 1991.54213
