Breed rules in Denmark

  • Banned
Hundeloven §1a: possession and breeding of these 13 breeds and any cross containing them is prohibited (since 2010); commercial import is banned. Dogs acquired before 17 March 2010 may be kept, but must always be on a lead of at most 2 metres and wear a closed muzzle in public (this exception does not cover Pit Bull Terrier and Tosa Inu). source
  • Import banned
Private persons, tourists included, may not bring the 13 listed breeds or their crosses into Denmark, not even on holiday. Transit is allowed if the dog stays in the vehicle apart from short breaks. Commercial import is banned too. source

Getting into Denmark

From an EU country
Non-commercial moves now follow Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/131, which replaced the rules of Regulation (EU) No 576/2013. The pet needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days before travel, and an EU pet passport, with a maximum of five dogs, cats or ferrets per vehicle unless they travel to a show or competition. Passports issued under the old rules stay usable for a transition period. source
Rabies antibody test
From most non-EU countries a rabies antibody test is needed: blood taken at least 30 days after the primary vaccination, tested at an EU-approved lab with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml, then a wait of 3 months from the blood sample before travel. Not needed for travel within the EU. source
Tapeworm treatment
Denmark does not require a tapeworm treatment. It is required only for dogs entering Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland, so plan it if travelling on to Norway. source
Quarantine
There is no quarantine for pets that meet the rules. A pet that fails the checks can be sent back, placed in quarantine until it complies (up to six months if the rabies rules were not met), or as a last resort put down. source
