Best dogs for apartments
Dogs that settle well in a flat: calm indoors, not too loud, happy with walks instead of a garden.
An apartment dog does not have to be small. What matters more is how calm the dog is indoors, how much it barks and how much exercise it needs. These breeds score highest on our apartment fit, which takes all three into account. A flat still means daily walks in every weather, a plan for when you are at work, and neighbours who hear the barking you do not. Check the house rules too: many buildings and landlords set weight limits or ban some breeds.
Scores 1 to 5 are our own estimate from the breed standards and the sources on each breed page, not a published rating. Open a breed for its costs, health and the rules where you live.
