Low-shedding dogs

Dogs that leave the least hair on the sofa. Useful for tidy homes, though no dog is truly allergy-free.

These breeds score lowest for shedding. Most have hair that keeps growing, like the poodle family and many terriers, so the hair stays on the dog instead of the floor. That means regular brushing and a trim every six to eight weeks, which costs money. Low shedding does not mean hypoallergenic: allergens come from skin flakes and saliva, and every dog has those. If someone in your home is allergic, spend time with the breed before you commit.

Scores 1 to 5 are our own estimate from the breed standards and the sources on each breed page, not a published rating. Open a breed for its costs, health and the rules where you live.
